1. BORROW – Have ANY Direct Loan that is Eligible, Subsidized or Unsubsidized Consolidation, PLUS, and Stafford NOTE: You might be able to combine your debts and still be eligible if your federal loans are not Direct Loans. Only payments made on the Direct Consolidation Loan, though, count toward the 120 monthly installments you must make.
2. WORK – Continue to Be Employed Full-Time by a Qualifying Public Service Organization and Maintain That Status Visit MyFedLoan.org/PSLF for further information on discovering public service groups that qualify. Not sure if your employer is eligible? To learn more, speak with them.
3. REPAY –
120 qualifying payments must be made on an approved repayment plan.
I want my payments to be applied to PSLF. What must I do to be taken into account?
- If required, combine any non-Direct Loans.
- Join a qualifying repayment program, ideally Income-Based Repayment (IBR).
- Pay your monthly installments on promptly and within your allotted amount, ideally through direct debit.
- Work for an acceptable job while you pay your bills.
- SEND IN THE EMPLOYER CERTIFICATION FORM, which is accessible at MyFedLoan.org/PSLF.
Congress established this initiative to encourage people to start working in public service positions and to keep doing so. When borrowers have made 120 payments on their qualifying federal student loans under specific repayment plans while working full-time for specific public sector companies, they may be eligible for forgiveness of the outstanding sum owing under the PSLF program.
The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) founded FedLoan Servicing to assist the U.S. Department of Education in managing federally held student loans. FedLoan Servicing and American Education Services are the national names under which PHEAA carries out its student loan servicing operations (AES).
With a focus on providing borrowers with simple and accessible methods to manage their student loans, FedLoan Servicing is one of a select group of companies authorized by the Department of Education to service these loans. In addition, FedLoan Servicing has been selected by the Department as the sole federal servicer in charge of observing and recording each borrower’s eligibility for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF).
